The History of Jokioinen
Permanent residence spread to Jokioinen in the 1300s. Jokioinen was part of Tammela up until the end of the1800s. Jokioinen became independent from Tammela in 1873. In 1631 Jokioinen was established as a part of the parish of Tammela and became an independent parish in 1693.
The history of Jokioinen is tightly connected to the Jokioinen estate, which was established in 1562. The estate developed into the largest estate in Finland during the time of the provincial governer von Willebrand. At the beginning of 1900s the estate had a corn mill, saw mill, a brick factory, steel plant and a sugar and syrup factory.
Due to the crofters law of 1918 and the land reform law of 1945 the estate was split into more than 1500 homes and small farms. The rest of the estate was transferred to the ownership of the Finnish state in 1918. In 1928 the Department of Finnish Plant Breeding from Tikkurila and in 1957 the observatory from Pasila were transferred to the Jokioinen estate.
At the end of the 1890s the Humppila-Jokioinen-Forssa private narrow gauge railway was built, which benefited the local industrial output. Regular train service seised in 1974.
The starting point of the formation of the municipality of Jokioinen came in 1865 with the decree of county government in the countryside. Here in Jokilääni it was carried out under exceptional circumstances. The then Tammela`s parish municipality that included Jokioinen, Humppila and Perttula (Ypäjä) decided on the 6th of December 1866 to form mutual county board to take care of the duties of the parish municipality. It did not succeed. The mutual county board could not successfully control what it was set out to do.
After six years of experimentation, the municipality decided to form its own local government on 16.11.1873. This was the year that they formed the municipality of Jokioinen. At the same meeting B. G. Lindell was elected the first chairman and Matti Kahilainen county board director. The 125th anniversary of formation of the municipality of Jokioinen was on the 9th of August 1998. The council members held the celebration meeting on the 10th of August 1998.
